Jesus looked Judas in the eye and asked, “Betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss?” Luke 22:48
A kiss, an act of affection used as a weapon. A sign of loyalty twisted into betrayal.

We usually think danger comes from obvious enemies, but Scripture reminds us that “the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” Sometimes the world smiles when it wants to pull you away from God. Sometimes temptation doesn’t look like a trap; it looks like comfort, acceptance, an opportunity, or a friendly invitation. The devil rarely shows up with a pitchfork, he shows up with what looks like a kiss.

Religion gets attacked the same way today.
People will praise “morality,” “spirituality,” “being a good person”, right before undermining the authority of Scripture.
Compromise often comes dressed in kindness.
Heresy usually starts with flattery.
And sin rarely announces itself; it whispers, persuades, and charms.

The young man in Proverbs followed the “kiss” of a flattering voice right into destruction. We face the same danger, slick words, smooth opportunities, the world’s approval. Holy Spirit, make us wise enough to see through it. Help us spot what looks good but leads nowhere.

But there’s another side of this passage we can’t ignore. It’s easy to point at Judas, but Jesus calls us to look inward. We take communion. We attend church. We lift our hands in worship. Those are signs of love, kisses of our lips. But are they sincere? Do our lives match our confession?

If I praise Jesus on Sunday but live like the world on Monday, what is that but a kiss of betrayal?
If I claim to follow Him but lead others to question His power because of my inconsistency, what am I showing them?

It’s a sobering thought — but a needed one.

Yet there is hope in this conviction. If we examine our hearts and find sincerity, we can ask God to keep us faithful.

Lord, keep my steps steady. Guard me from the kind of compromise that sneaks in quietly. Let my love for You be real, consistent, and lasting. I do love You, Jesus. Even though I fail, my desire is to stay faithful to the end. Never let me betray You for the world’s approval.
