“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Before Jesus ever took His first breath, Heaven declared His mission. His name was not chosen for sound or sentiment. It was chosen for purpose. Jesus means “The Lord saves.” Not might save. Not tries to save. He shall save.
Notice what the angel did not say. He did not say Jesus would save His people from Rome. He did not say He would save them from hardship, sickness, or struggle. He said He would save them from their sins.
Sin is not just what we do. It is what separates. It is what weighs the conscience, distorts the heart, and fractures our fellowship with God. And from the very beginning, the gospel was clear: Jesus did not come to manage sin, excuse sin, or merely warn about sin. He came to save us from it.
Grace does not minimize sin.
Grace defeats it.
This is why His name matters so much. When you call on His name, you are calling on the very purpose for which He came. He saves us not by demanding perfection first, but by granting forgiveness freely and then transforming us from the inside out.
Living grace to grace means we stop trying to save ourselves. We stop carrying guilt that He already carried to the cross. We stop identifying by our failures and start identifying by His finished work.
He shall save His people. And if you are His, that promise includes you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your name and for Your mission. Thank You that You came to save me from my sin, not shame me for it. Help me live today in the freedom You purchased, walking not in guilt but in gratitude. Teach me to trust Your grace and rest in Your salvation. Amen.
Grace to Grace Application
Today, when shame whispers your past, speak His name. When guilt tries to define you, remember His purpose. You are not who you were. You are someone Jesus came to save.
