In church circles across America, the idea of “separating from sin” has long been a mark of holiness. From pulpits to pews, we’ve heard it repeated: If you want to be close to God, stay away from sin.

And that’s not wrong, but it’s not the full truth either.

I’ve heard that message my whole life, and I’ve even preached it. But one day, standing in my backyard looking at this big oak tree, something hit me. That tree has never sinned once. It’s never lied, never cheated, never broken a commandment. But it’s no closer to Jesus than anyone else.

Why? Because separation from sin alone doesn’t save.

Salvation and transformation come when we’re separated unto Christ.

The Difference Between “From” and “Unto”

In Romans 1:1, Paul describes himself as “a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God.”

That word “unto” is powerful. It doesn’t mean “away from.” It means toward—it means stepping into something new.

Paul wasn’t just avoiding sin; he was entering into the life and purpose of Christ. He wasn’t focused on what he left behind; he was focused on who he was following.

And that’s where real transformation begins.

Beyond Legalism

Religion loves lists. Don’t do this. Don’t go there. Don’t talk to them. But if your faith is defined only by what you don’t do, you’ll eventually find yourself empty or worse, proud.

Repentance means to turn around. But turning from sin is only half the story. You have to turn toward something.

If you turn from sin toward nothing but good deeds, you’ve gained nothing.
If you turn from sin just to be a better man, you’re still lost.
But if you turn from sin and toward Jesus, you find life, grace, and purpose.

It’s not about avoiding evil; it’s about pursuing Christ.

From Denial to Discipleship

Peter denied Jesus three times, even cursed to distance himself from Him. And yet, that same man stood on the day of Pentecost and preached a sermon that led 3,000 souls to salvation.

That didn’t happen because Peter perfected himself. It happened because Peter refused to quit. He turned not just from failure but unto Christ.

God doesn’t call perfect people. He calls people who won’t give up when they fall.

The Shift We Need

I believe God is calling His church to shift from checklist religion to relationship faith.

Don’t let your walk with God be defined by what you’re running from. Let it be defined by Who you’re running to.

A Call to Action

So here’s the question that’s been on my heart lately:

What will you do today for the cause of Christ and the work of His Kingdom?

It’s not about perfection.
It’s not about performance.
It’s about pursuit.

Because holiness isn’t about being separated from sin.
It’s about being separated unto Christ.

And that, my friend, is where grace meets growth.

Scripture Focus:
Romans 1:1 – “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God.”

Reflection:
Are you living a life defined by what you’ve left behind or by the One you’re following?

Prayer:
Lord, help me not to just avoid sin but to actively pursue You. Let my life be marked not by distance from the world, but by closeness to Christ. Amen.
