After Elijah had rested, eaten and regained strength, God asked him a question. “What doest thou here?” Elijah began to speak honestly. He felt alone. Overwhelmed. Surrounded. Hopeless.

God did not correct his feelings. He redirected his focus. God brought Elijah out of the cave and onto a mountain. Elijah saw the wind, the earthquake and the fire. But God was in none of them. Then came the still small voice.

Fear is loud. Anxiety is violent. Trauma is noisy. But healing often comes quietly. When God shifted Elijah’s attention away from the terrifying and toward the truth of His presence, Elijah’s mind began to heal.

God reminded him he was not alone. He assigned him new purpose. He led him to connect with Jehu and Elisha who would fight alongside him. Elijah stepped out of the cave and into community again. Anxiety no longer drove him. Faith did.

If your mind is weary, step out of the cave today. Listen for the still small voice. God is not in the terror that floods your thoughts. He is with you. He has people for you. He has purpose for you. And He will lead you out one step at a time.
