Before God ever spoke to Elijah about his fear, He met his physical needs. The angel touched him. Fed him. Let him sleep. Came back a second time and did it again. Only after Elijah had rested, eaten, and regained strength did the Lord begin the deeper work inside him.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do for someone suffering mentally is simply be there. Sit with them. Bring them a meal. Help them rest. Provide a safe place. Encourage them gently to take small steps forward when the time is right.
Presence is ministry. Compassion is ministry. Care is ministry.
The Church often thinks ministry only happens when we speak. But with Elijah the first ministry was silence, support, and sustenance. There are moments when someone cannot yet hear counsel. Moments when trauma is fresh. Moments when anxiety is at its peak. In those moments we mirror the heart of God when we show up, stay near, and help carry the load.
You may not be able to fix someone’s mind, but you can feed them, encourage them, pray for them, and stand beside them while God restores what fear has broken. Ministry begins with presence. And presence prepares the heart for healing.
